Barry Bricken: the Designer There is one indisputable truth about Barry Bricken: designing clothing is in his blood.
The son of a Baltimore men’s trouser manufacturer, Barry knew from the outset he wanted to be in the fashion industry. After graduating from college, he opened a men’s clothing store in Baltimore at the height of the 60s. He already knew what he wanted to sell the kind of clothes he liked to wear himself. But they proved exceedingly difficult to find. So, frustrated in locating the men’s trousers he wanted, he decided to change strategies and get into manufacturing. Within a short time, he had created his own line of men’s trousers from high quality British tweeds and Italian flannels.
Then, with the energy and ambition of youth, he headed to the fashion world’s Mecca, New York, without knowing a soul in the business. "I remember running around the city and showing my samples from a brown paper bag, or on my bed," says Bricken. But before long, he had Bloomingdales, Paul Stuart and Saks as accounts.
Thus was the company Barry Bricken formed. Although the family business had been around for more than 50 years, Barry and his brother took over from Bricken pere in the 70’s, with an eye towards moving the company’s lines – and its customers — more upmarket.
Once the men’s pants line was established, women’s pants were added, and eventually the complete women’s collection and collection of menswear. All are distinguished by their clean, contemporary lines, fine fabrics and uncompromising attention to detail. Barry now oversees all the work produced by a team of dedicated designers, each of whom shares his passion for excellence and his commitment to quality. Chief among them is Jerry Dellova, who returns to Barry Bricken as head womens wear designer.
A member of the prestigious Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), he is also the founder and current president of the Designers Collective, a fashion trade group aimed at fashion forward buyers.
